Spanish, Spanish and some more Spanish!! Today Mark Seifert and his son Mark Jr. joined me for a 4 hour inshore trip. As we headed towards the Pass we noticed that the entire south shoreline of Pensacola BAy was covered in Spanish Mackerel. We quickly rigged our rods with Diamond Jigs on heavy flourocarbon and got after them! We caught a steady stream of Spanish for the first two hours of the trip!

With enough in the box for dinner we switched gears and went looking for Flounder. The flounder bite has been really slow the last few weeks in the Pass with only a few keepers being caught here and there, so after about 45 minutes trying them we decided to finish up the day catching Redfish back near Gulf Breeze. We pitched docks for the last hour of the trip and only had three small Redfish to show for our efforts. While the rat reds were alot of fun to catch they did nothing to help with our fish for the dinner table.

This was another really fun trip with a great Father and Son team!!

Inshore/Nearshore Charters
Sorry for the lack of reports this week. I had quite a few trips and just got lazy!!..LOL

The fishing is still really good, it just takes a little more work to fill a cooler with fish. the trout bite has improved drastically over the last few days. Not sure if the rain has finally done its job or the fish just decided to start biting again. We’ve been throwing popping corks with 3′ of #20 Fluoro for best results. It seems that the fish are most active in the 3′ – 5′ areas. Also the redfish seem to be stacking back up on the docks in Santa Rosa Sound.

I have been pitching shrimp under the docks around late morning for best success! Also the bite offshore is still very good with Black Snapper and Lane Snapper still taking the bait. I have also been catching alot of Triggers this week, they just are all about 1″ shy of legal. But for non stop action and a box full of fish….. You just can’t beat the Spanish Mackerel bite. These fish are thicker than I ever remember ever seeing them.

Here are a few pics from this week and I will post more reports this week!

What a wild trip! With high winds and rain squalls everywhere, my guys were ready to fish! We had planned to fish for Kings Mackerel and then head offshore a little bit to catch some larger fish, but mother nature had other plans. We decided on a four hour inshore trip just to spend some time on the water and catch some fish. We started out very quickly catching and releasing trout. Seemed like every shrimp that hit the water turned into a good bite.

We moved around the Sound bouncing from spot to spot and managed to catch around 30 trout. Most were a little on the small side but a few were good solid keepers. We also managed to catch two really nice Spanish and a ton of Ladyfish! This was a really fun trip, we caught fish for the entire four hours and had a blast doing it. It just goes to show you, You never know unless you go!!!

Another great day on the water with a great group of guys!

Another beautiful day in the water! Today the plan was Redfish, with the Pass loaded and the flats covered with em it sounded like a great idea……….. at the time!! Mr. Connor has never caught a red and had no interest in Snapper, trout or anything else. So with perfect conditions we headed towards the Pass in search of a lifetime first.

This is where the story gets good. We fished around for an hour waiting for the all important tide to start falling and the fish to start feeding. Once the tide started its fall we were positioned with a well full of perfect baits. We drifted and we drifted and we moved and we repositioned and we drifted. We switched baits, we downsized tackle. We drifted we moved some more……. still no bites. Almost defeated and about to give up we finally got a bite. Mr. Joe got hammered by a large red but the fish quickly ran us into the rocks and busted us off. with a slight glimmer of hope I rallied the troops re-tied and sent baits down again. Well, we drifted, we moved, we repositioned and still no bites. After an exhausting 3 hours and nothing to show for it we decided to hit the Flounder hole and a few inshore wrecks and at least pull on a few fish. First stop we caught several small Snapper and a nice Gag. With very little time left we hit the Flounder spot and caught three nice fish and lost a few more real nice ones.

With my tail tucked between my legs and a feeling of defeat I headed back to the dock. After the fish were cleaned and the trip was over, Mr. Joe informed it was a great trip and he would be back to fish with me again real soon. Sometimes the fish don’t bite and you just can’t seem to do anything right. But it proves as long as you work as hard as you can for someone they still appreciate your time and effort.

……………… See you out there

What a BEAUTIFUL day! This morning I was joined by Collin and his two Sons, John and Owen. We panned a 3 hour inshore trips with hopes of an Inshore Slam. We started on the trout and caught around a dozen or so small fish. We fished from Santa Rosa Sound to Big Lagoon and could not find one single keeper. At around 0730 we switched over and headed for the flounder grounds. First drop Collin hooks a solid fish and I knew it was gonna be a good bite. The next few drifts were on fire. We caught a nice Flounder 5 out of the next 8 attempts. With time running low and the heat of the day starting to wear on the young boys we decided to call it a day and head back to dock with a nice catch. The Flounder really seem to be making a come back in the deeper water in and around Pensacola Pass. I am having best luck fishing them with a really short leader and a heavy lead to keep it near the bottom.

The bites are by no means subtle so this should be a steady bite for a few more days..

Inshore/Nearshore Charters

Flatfish Sunday!! Today I had the pleasure of guiding Mr. and Mrs. Ohashi on a 4 hour inshore trip. We had planned on trying to catch a few Redfish and throw a few Flounder in the box for dinner. We started out drifting the Pass and couldn’t lose a bait. We had two strikes that did not result in redfish so after just a handful of drifts I moved to a location that would bring much more action and a few Flounder.

That turned out to be the best move i have made all week! The Flounder were starving! We caught Flounder every other drift for about an hour. We boated between 8 – 10 flounder in no time. We also boated a nice Black Snapper, red Snapper, and a very small Grouper all in the same area. The Ohashi’s only wanted to keep a few for dinner so with Five flounder in the box we struck off on search of other species. By the time we got started looking for Spanish a large Storm began to develop to the South and that shut our trip down. We made the long crazy run back to the launch and called it a day!!
