What a tough day!! I knew I have had it to easy lately and that a bad day was coming, but man! Today I guided Shaun, Chastity, Veronica and Nick on a 6 hour trip. We planned to go play with the Bull reds for an hour or so then try to snag a few Flounder before hitting the flats to catch a few Specks before we ran out of time.

Well, once we arrived at the Pass we found out that a few Bull Sharks had moved in and were attacking the hooked reds and had shut the red bite down. No problem, lets move over and catch a few Flounder, we had a well full of Bull Minnows and Shrimp. The Flounder just didn’t seem to want them, we caught a few and lost a few but nothing like the bite has been in the last couple of weeks. Thats when I went into find fish mode, I hit every piece of structure in the Bay that has produced a bite for me and found nothing. A skip jack here, a catfish there. Even got on a good bite of squirrel fish for a while, just couldn’t find what we were looking for. With an hour left we ran back to the South side of the ICW and hoped we find a few trout. We found plenty of catfish and a handful of tiny trout, but none that we could put in the box.

All in all it was a challenge to say the least and I’m grateful I had a crew that knows thats sometimes it doesn’t matter what you try, you just can’t get em.

………………..see you out there

(sorry not a whole lot of pics to look at today)

Another Day, another redfish!! Thats really been the story of the week! Today I guided Dan Precourt and his Son in Law Gus Duran on a 6 hour trip to the Pass!! The focus was again the giant Bull reds and then finish on some Flounder!

First drop in the Pass we had a red on. It didn’t take us long to get into the groove of things when the fish eat as soon as your bait hits the bottom. We caught quite a few reds in the first couple hours of our trip including three over the 20lb mark!! One which was Gus’ biggest fish ever! Once the tide started dumping good I decided to make the move to start whacking on the Flounder, bad move!!! The Flounder just would not give it up for me today!!! Great water movement, great bait and a good location, still a slow bite. We did manage to land four really nice fish. Just not the numbers I have been on the last few trips.

While fighting the good fight against the lock jawed Flounders we did manage to catch two Gag’s, one red grouper, three red snapper and a dang near legal Scamp. All in all another great day fishing and another great day to be a Guide!!!

April Showers bring May……..Redfish? Sure why not, the redfish bite the last couple of weeks has been incredible!! Ed, Brett and Josh Leach joined me today for a 6 hour trip! The plan as to drift the Pass and catch a handful of Reds then switch gears and load the boat with Flounder for a Leach Family fish fry tonight.

When we reached the Pass the tide was slack and had not started falling yet. A few reds were being caught every once in a while, we even hooked one and lost it fairly quick after getting started. After about 45 minutes of me making excuses why we weren’t catching anything it happened!!! All three rods bowed up at once like someone had flipped a switch!! We went from nothing to a triple header of Bull reds in a flash!!! We quickly boated the fish and took a few pics and went back to work! Mr. Ed Leach seemed to have the hot hand and continued to land the Bulls for the next hour or so!! After boating 7 or 8 reds it was time to start thinking about dinner. With the tide moving steady now I knew the North Rocks would hold some flounder so that’s where we went. First drift was a small keeper followed by 7 more in the next hour including one that was a hair over 5lbs!!!

Another great day fishing our beautiful stretch of coastline!!

The past few weeks have been fantastic on the grassflats. The water is warm and the wind has finally decided to lay down. Myself and a couple of buddies have basically been on the kayak every other day. We’re waking up at 5am to be greeted with glassy calm conditions. Time for the topwater…

We’re catching quite a few slot reds with a couple good sized trout in the mix too. I’m throwing on the edges of sand flats and also along side of mullet schools.  Here’s Wade with a topwater trout.

Wade with a topwater trout

Upper slots are abundant as well. I got this guy with the gold spoon. Solid 26 incher.

The sunset bite has been very good as well. It seems that the deeper water(3-4ft) has been holding the fish. We’re sticking with the topwater all the way till the sun goes down. Jack with a slot.

The fishing is hot! Now time for a little break. My knees are burnt!

June 1st can’t get here soon enough! Today I guided Shaun, Chastity, Justin and Lindsay on a 6 hour Gulf trip. Our goal was to get a box load of great fish and to pull on some big fish! Our first stop of the morning we did just that. First spot we managed to catch a Keeper Gag weighing a little over 9 lbs and several snapper over the 10lb mark!! Not a bad way to start a morning.

On the same spot we were freight trained by a few fish that we couldn’t even slow down! The bite was amazing, we hit two more spots to finish up our day. We managed to find a really good AJ bite but ran out of baits after boating three and losing one more and on another spot we boated a few Lane Snapper, Black Snapper and White Snapper. The bite in the Gulf right now is as good as it gets and should stay hot the rest of the year! Most of our fish were caught in 85 foot of water on large live baits. The tide line in the bay is holding a lot of Thread Fins right now, so be sure and take the time to load up before heading out!

All in all a great day on the water with a great crew! Thanks to Shaun, Chastity, Justin and Lindsay for your service to our Country and i hope to have the pleasure of fishing with you guys again real soon!!

First off Happy Mothers Day and I hope everyone had a great one! I know I did, Today i was joined by the Burnett Family, Hallie, Todd and Zane are regular clients and good friends of mine. The goal today was to tug on some big fish and get Hallie a mess of fish for dinner.

We started out by running to the North Rocks and trying to land a few Flounder. The bite has been really good this week it’s just really tide oriented. The bite is slow and really picky until about 3 hours from the peak of the incoming tide. For that last 2-3 hours the Flounder and redfish go into a feeding frenzy. The Flounder seem to prefer the bull minnows over shrimp and the Redfish are targeting the Croakers and Pinfish.

After the bite fired off in the Pass we caught several large Redfish and Flounder and even a nice Black Drum thrown in for good measure. After a week off it was great to get back to running trips and I couldn’t have picked a better day or crew to get back in the swing of things!
