With the warm spring weather on the brink and everyone getting the itch to hit the water now’s a good time to check and make sure your fishing license is current. Last August the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) implemented the shoreline saltwater fishing license, which anglers who fish from shore or a structure affixed to shore must buy.

Who needs a license?

Resident licenses can be purchased by any person who has resided in Florida for 6 continuous months prior to the issuance of a license and who claims Florida as his/her primary residence or any member of the United States Armed Forces who is stationed in Florida (includes spouse and dependent children residing in the household).

You do not need a hunting, freshwater fishing, or saltwater fishing license if you are a child under 16 years of age, you are a Florida resident age 65 or older possessing proof of age and residency, you are a Florida resident certified as totally and permanently disabled and you possess a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing Certificate, or you are a resident who is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States, you are not stationed in this state, and you are home on leave for 30 days or less, upon submission of orders.

Buying a License

Fishing and hunting licenses can be purchased from the tax collectors office for the amount shown or from a license vendor such as tackle stores for the license cost plus an issuance fee.

They can be purchased over the phone by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA (486-8356) or 888-FISH-FLORIDA (347-4356). A $3.25 + 2.5% surcharge of total sale per person will be added to your purchase.

If you would like to buy one online you can follow the links at myfwc.com. A $2.25 + 2.5% surcharge of total sale per person will be added to your purchase.

Where to fish without a license?

The only places you can fish in Florida without a fishing license are on piers or charter boats that possess a license that covers everyone. Several good places for land locked anglers in Pensacola that provide a license are the Pensacola Bay Fishing Bridge, Pensacola Beach Gulf Fishing Pier, and Fort Pickens Pier.

Florida Sportsman Show

 Anglers,

Please come check out the Florida Sportsman show this Saturday, Feb 20th and Sunday, Feb 21st at the Fort Walton Beach fair grounds. Capt. Chris Phillips, Capt. Matt Mcleod, and myself will be introducing a new line of fishing rods to the panhandle. You don’t  want to miss the opportunity to check out the best inshore fishing rods on the market!

The rods we will be showing are American Rodsmiths. As Capt. Matt already said…they are a company based out of Huston Texas. Some of you who keep up with the redfish tours may be familiar with them. These rods sparked a lot of interest when American Rodsmiths team of Cajun Phil and Kevin Broussard, won this years Oberta Redfish Cup championship, right here in Pensacola, FL.  I have worked with fishing rods my entire life and I can truly say that American Rodsmiths is the most innovative, up to date, rod company in the fishing industry. The price points on these rods range from around $99.99 all the way to 349.99. Even the lowest end rods come with titanium coated, stainless steel, guides!!

We will be more than happy to go through each and every rod with you. If you are into inshore fishing, freshwater fishing, or offshore fishing, then this is a line of fishing tackle that you must see! Check out there website for more info….http://www.americanrodsmiths.com/

Also, for all of you kayak fisherman, we have a line of rods just for you!

thanks,

Thanks for visiting our site a checking out my profile. My name is Matt McLeod and I have made a living on the water my entire life.  My first job was deck handing on offshore charter boats during the summers when I was in school. After I was eighteen years old I got my captains license and began running trips on my own not long after that. I am now 28 years old and have been a professional guide, running offshore, near shore, and inshore charters, for a decade.  My charter business is Hot Spots Charters; you can check us out at www.hotspotscharters.com. I have developed a very successful charter business with a high customer return rate. I enjoy being on the water and sharing our fishery with my costumers.

I also have extensive tournament experience. I fished Southern Kingfish Association tournaments for 10 years, qualifying for the National Championship every year as well as winning a division one year.  More recently I have fished FLW redfish tournaments for 3 years and also IFA redfish tournaments. I also compete in all the local area tournaments in the panhandle.

I also currently hold an IGFA All-Tackle world record for pomfret. A pomfret is a deep water fish that I caught while fishing for swordfish one night.

I am proud to be involved in the “Hook, Line and Sinker Seminar Series”. These seminars, located at Flounder’s Restaurant on Pensacola Beach, are once every month for the entire year. This is a very successful series that highlights one species a month delivering information, tactics and expertise to crowds of often 300+ people.

In February of 2009 my business partner Chris Phillips and I opened a bait and tackle store in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Hot Spots Bait and Tackle has been a dream of ours for years, allowing us to be involved with even more people in our fishing community. You can check out the store at www.hotspotstackle.com.

Thanks again for checking out our site. If you would like to contact me with questions, suggestions or to book a charter you can email me at mcleodfish@yahoo.com or give me a call 850.418.5333.

On December 31st 2009 I guided Josh and his two sons on some Pensacola bay trout and redfish action. I was very confident going into the trip, seeings how I had located a good number of fish just two days prior. We were a little late taking off because the fog hurt our vision and it would have been unsafe to run through such conditions. Around 8 a.m. the fog lifted and off we went to our first stop. Little did I know this would be our last stop of the day. I had two of my clients rigged with a Berkely Gulp and the other with a live shrimp for trout. I got them into position and all three of them made great cast into the deep water droppoff that was holding fish a few days before. The two boys both hooked up with mid to upper slot reds

on the first cast. One was caught on a live shrimp and the other on a gulp. After that it was constant action throughout the morning. I ended up rigging them up with three soft plastics and let them cast and catch an assortment of trout, reds, and black drum. All of the fish were caught in 13ft of water off a dropoff. In fact I haven’t caught a good fish in less than 8ft of water fishing the upper bays in the last 3 weeks. This cold snap we are having is only going to make it better.

A guides life during the winter can be very tough. With cold weather and little business, most of us tend to do other things like hunt, or work a number of odd jobs. I was fortunate to get a few calls for trips over the christmas break and into the first week of January, so I new that locating fish was first on my agenda.

I have two morning trips during the balance of the week so I decided to take Tuesday morning and search for some upper bay trout and reds with my father. Numerous rainfall over the month of December has screwed up Pensacola’s bay systems, which makes finding fish very difficult. We started the morning looking for trout which are usually easy to find this time a year. After hitting 6 or 7 spots without a bite we made a 5 mile run to an area that has proved productive when nothing else seems to work. As we approached the area we were greeted with lot’s of birds diving on bait, which as any fisherman knows, is a very a good sign during the winter. After a few minutes of casting dad was the first to hook up. He boated a nice 21″ red which was released. As my dad was releasing his fish my drag started screaming. A couple minutes later I boated a nice 27″ red. After that it was constant action for a about 10 minutes catching several nice trout and a handful of mid to upper slot redfish. We left after 15 minutes becuase I didn’t want to drain the watering hole since I have several trips scheduled for the end of the week. We hit several more spots in that area finding more trout and reds. We called it a morning around 10am.

As a guide I feel that pre fishing is very important, unless of course it is the summer and you are chartering everday. Then you will always have the fish located. If nothing else prefishing gives you that confidence factor that you don’t have when you are having to fish blind. I love knowing where the fish are before I run a charter!
