A few times in a Guides life come along where he gets to fish with guys like I was honored enough to fish with today! Mr. John Boivin and Mr. Jim Buchli joined me today for a quick Sheepshead whacking trip. After the fog lifted and we had good visibility we fired the Yamaha F250 up and blasted off towards the Pass.

When we arrived we were the only boat in the area and the wind and current were both dead still. First drop Mr. John hooked a fine 6lb Sheepshead and it was game on! We sat and picked at the Sheepies for about 3 hours with a slow but steady bite! We managed to boat 18 nice fish without much trouble. We then decided to change gears and go try to boat a few Bay red Snapper before heading home. I pulled up on the first spot and the bite was RED HOT!! We caught snapper on almost every drop. They were not all that big but lots of fun on the light tackle we were using today!

After catching a dozen or so Snapper we decided to call it a day and head home. Today was a great day with great people and I really hope I have the chance to fish with these guys again in the future!

……………..See you out there

One word………..AMAZING!!!

Today I was joined by Bob, Bobby, Colby and Sammy Zugg from Austin, Texas. The plan was to see if the Sheepshead spawn had started yet and hope to boat a few of the tasty critters before the wind started howling!

Without putting to firm a point on it, THE SPAWN HAS STARTED!!! Holy cow, we boated 4-6lb Sheepshead every single drift we made. We had double headers and triple headers what an amazing day. It didn’t hurt any that these guys could flat out fish! But it sure made life easy today. The key to success today was drifting deep structure in the Pass with live shrimp.

To end the day, we decided to see if we could catch a redfish on artificial. I made a long run back East to a set of docks that have been holding a lot of really good redfish lately. With 30 minutes left on the clock we slowly moved in. In less than a dozen cast young Colby Zugg hung into a perfect 23″ slot red on artificial!! This was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Today was a beautiful day to be on the water. Today I was lucky enough to have two charters. My morning trip was Father and Son tandem Mike and Mikey Goolsbay out of Oklahama. These guys were looking for a few fish to eat and alot of good fights! We started out on the North Rocks and the bite was a little slow. We picked a few nice sheepies for an hour or two. Then like someone hit a switch we started hauling fish over the sides. We caught several small Snapper and a few small Grouper as well. With an hour or so left on our trip we decided to switch gears and try to catch a few Redfish. With an insider tip from a good friend we quickly hooked the two we needed and called it a day!

For the afternoon trip I was joined my The Hastings Family. John, Katherine and John from St. Louis. These guys wanted to try and catch some large fish and feel a big fight. I loaded them up and made short work of the long run back to where I had a bit earlier caught the Redfish. When we arrived we found the fish still there and still HUNGRY! We quickly hooked and landed two and then had trouble keeping the last one we needed hooked up. After a lot of chasing and hard work we managed to hook and land one more fish! With sore arms the Hastings informed me it was time to go land a few Sheepies for dinner. We quickly landed the four fish they had requested and turned the boat back East towards the dock. Today was a fun and exciting day and reminded me why I love being a Guide!!

The last two weeks along the Gulf Coast have been amazing. With temperatures in the low 70′s the winds light and the water crystal clear the fishing is starting to fire off.  My better half Dawna and I have spent the last two weekends scouting local areas for the best bites.

Everything seems to be moving into their Spring patterns. The Sheepshead are already starting to stack up on the deeper structure in the Bay and in Pensacola Pass. The Giant Bull Redfish are also making a great showing with good numbers patrolling the beaches waiting for the Springtime bait that should be well on its way. Of course the ever present and abundant Red Snapper are everywhere. They seem to be on every wreck or reef you can make it to in the Gulf.

A beautiful couple weeks in a beautiful place!!!

Here are a few pictures from some of my recent trips. Today was really cool. We caught sheepsheads first and then decided to go look around in the gulf since it was so nice. We went 2 for 3 on cobia from my bay boat with no tower! One was small and we released the little guy unharmed, one was 40-45 lbs but I couldn’t get him to eat, and the one we kept was about 30 lbs.

A guides life during the winter can be very tough. With cold weather and little business, most of us tend to do other things like hunt, or work a number of odd jobs. I was fortunate to get a few calls for trips over the christmas break and into the first week of January, so I new that locating fish was first on my agenda.

I have two morning trips during the balance of the week so I decided to take Tuesday morning and search for some upper bay trout and reds with my father. Numerous rainfall over the month of December has screwed up Pensacola’s bay systems, which makes finding fish very difficult. We started the morning looking for trout which are usually easy to find this time a year. After hitting 6 or 7 spots without a bite we made a 5 mile run to an area that has proved productive when nothing else seems to work. As we approached the area we were greeted with lot’s of birds diving on bait, which as any fisherman knows, is a very a good sign during the winter. After a few minutes of casting dad was the first to hook up. He boated a nice 21″ red which was released. As my dad was releasing his fish my drag started screaming. A couple minutes later I boated a nice 27″ red. After that it was constant action for a about 10 minutes catching several nice trout and a handful of mid to upper slot redfish. We left after 15 minutes becuase I didn’t want to drain the watering hole since I have several trips scheduled for the end of the week. We hit several more spots in that area finding more trout and reds. We called it a morning around 10am.

As a guide I feel that pre fishing is very important, unless of course it is the summer and you are chartering everday. Then you will always have the fish located. If nothing else prefishing gives you that confidence factor that you don’t have when you are having to fish blind. I love knowing where the fish are before I run a charter!
