One word………..AMAZING!!!

Today I was joined by Bob, Bobby, Colby and Sammy Zugg from Austin, Texas. The plan was to see if the Sheepshead spawn had started yet and hope to boat a few of the tasty critters before the wind started howling!

Without putting to firm a point on it, THE SPAWN HAS STARTED!!! Holy cow, we boated 4-6lb Sheepshead every single drift we made. We had double headers and triple headers what an amazing day. It didn’t hurt any that these guys could flat out fish! But it sure made life easy today. The key to success today was drifting deep structure in the Pass with live shrimp.

To end the day, we decided to see if we could catch a redfish on artificial. I made a long run back East to a set of docks that have been holding a lot of really good redfish lately. With 30 minutes left on the clock we slowly moved in. In less than a dozen cast young Colby Zugg hung into a perfect 23″ slot red on artificial!! This was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

………………See you out there

Today was a beautiful day to be on the water. Today I was lucky enough to have two charters. My morning trip was Father and Son tandem Mike and Mikey Goolsbay out of Oklahama. These guys were looking for a few fish to eat and alot of good fights! We started out on the North Rocks and the bite was a little slow. We picked a few nice sheepies for an hour or two. Then like someone hit a switch we started hauling fish over the sides. We caught several small Snapper and a few small Grouper as well. With an hour or so left on our trip we decided to switch gears and try to catch a few Redfish. With an insider tip from a good friend we quickly hooked the two we needed and called it a day!

For the afternoon trip I was joined my The Hastings Family. John, Katherine and John from St. Louis. These guys wanted to try and catch some large fish and feel a big fight. I loaded them up and made short work of the long run back to where I had a bit earlier caught the Redfish. When we arrived we found the fish still there and still HUNGRY! We quickly hooked and landed two and then had trouble keeping the last one we needed hooked up. After a lot of chasing and hard work we managed to hook and land one more fish! With sore arms the Hastings informed me it was time to go land a few Sheepies for dinner. We quickly landed the four fish they had requested and turned the boat back East towards the dock. Today was a fun and exciting day and reminded me why I love being a Guide!!

Two hours in the pass

Today’s weather was fantastic so I decided to try a short solo trip. I loaded the boat up and was on the water by 12. Arrived at the pass and dropped down at around 45ft. My only available bait was dead, warm shrimp so I wasn’t expecting much action. Much to my surprise, I was fighting fish the whole time! Within 5min of my first drop, a big bull red grabbed my line! The heavy action carrot stix did its job.

Bull red

He swam away just fine so I position for another drift. The bite was very consistent. Just about every drop was either a sheep or a red. Drift #2 gave me another bull.

As expected, the sheeps were biting everything. I’m pretty sure I missed about 10 but I still managed to bring in a few.

By 2pm, I was beat red so I decided to call it quits. It was definately a great two hours of fishing! I was pretty surprised that my near rotten shrimp did so well!

I had the pleasure of taking Denis, a return customer of mine, and some of his family and friends on a fishing trip yesterday. The weather was nice, still a little cold when the clouds were out, but getting better! The fish bit pretty well, it was hit and miss throughout the morning but in the early afternoon we got on them hot! Total for the day was 15 nice sheepsheads, 3 pompano, and 1 redfish.

Dan caught this nice keeper gag grouper but the season is closed until next month so back he went.

Florida Sportsman Show

 Anglers,

Please come check out the Florida Sportsman show this Saturday, Feb 20th and Sunday, Feb 21st at the Fort Walton Beach fair grounds. Capt. Chris Phillips, Capt. Matt Mcleod, and myself will be introducing a new line of fishing rods to the panhandle. You don’t  want to miss the opportunity to check out the best inshore fishing rods on the market!

The rods we will be showing are American Rodsmiths. As Capt. Matt already said…they are a company based out of Huston Texas. Some of you who keep up with the redfish tours may be familiar with them. These rods sparked a lot of interest when American Rodsmiths team of Cajun Phil and Kevin Broussard, won this years Oberta Redfish Cup championship, right here in Pensacola, FL.  I have worked with fishing rods my entire life and I can truly say that American Rodsmiths is the most innovative, up to date, rod company in the fishing industry. The price points on these rods range from around $99.99 all the way to 349.99. Even the lowest end rods come with titanium coated, stainless steel, guides!!

We will be more than happy to go through each and every rod with you. If you are into inshore fishing, freshwater fishing, or offshore fishing, then this is a line of fishing tackle that you must see! Check out there website for more info….http://www.americanrodsmiths.com/

Also, for all of you kayak fisherman, we have a line of rods just for you!

thanks,

Hot Trout Bite!

Guided Mr. Aaron Sago today for some trout/redfish action in East and Blackwater bay. We hit the Water around 1 oclock and headed to a couple deep water areas near east bay. We managed 2 slot reds and a rat within the first few minutes then the action slowed. We ran back towards blackwater bay checking a number of different spots with no luck. The tide wasn’t moving much and with all the mullet dead it seemed, that the normal hot spots were not producing fish.

Before heading north to chase stripers, I ended up checking a deep hole a couple miles south of the i10 bridge and it was on! We would drop a 1/4oz jig head down 20ft and the second it hit the bottom you were on. We pulled about 30 trout and several reds then moved on towards the bridge.

The area around the bridge was holding a few big fish but it was tough to get them to bite. We managed a couple nice fish around the bridge and called it a day. We ended up with about 35 trout and 7 reds. Surpisingly the trout were big! Most of them ranged from 16 to 20″ with several 22 and 1 right at 25″.  We looked around for stripers at dark but they were MIA!
