It doesn’t get much nicer in the Gulf than it was today. When a 22′ Bay Boat can make 36 mph and still be comfortable…… you know it’s flat!!

Today I was joined by a great return client, Maria fished with me during the Sheepshead spawn and came back today to go after a few red Snapper. Maria, Chad, Bow and Katie met me at Shoreline Park at 0600 and off we went. After a quick stop at the bait boat we headed due South for about 7 miles before we started. First drift was a keeper Scamp and a Snapper. That’s how I like to start. After that we went to work, we caught Red Snapper, Scamp, Lane Snapper and Black Snapper all at our first stop. That really takes the pressure off me and allows me to enjoy myself a little more. We bounced around for an hour or so, looking at a few other spots catching a fish here and a fish there. Just none of them seemed to be on fire like the first one.

With time left for one more stop and room in the cooler for one more Snapper we stopped at a spot that has been on fire all season. Second drop we hook a monster!! It turns out to be a solid 14lb Snapper. After a few pictures and a few high fives we counted our fish one last time, ice them down and pointed the boat back towards the Pass.

We have been fishing for red snapper almost every day lately. The weather has been good and the snapper have been big and everywhere! A variety of live and dead baits like butterflied menhaden, live croakers, pinfish, and threadfins have all been productive. Along with red snapper we are also catching scamp, mingos and some trigger fish to add a little variety to the box. Get out there while you can, snapper season will be over before you know it!

The weather finally allowed us to get out there and search for a cobia after a couple rough days. We were fishing the First Annual Paradise Small Boat Cobia Tournament. The weather was nice most of the day with just light winds, although the fishing wasn’t all that great. We went 1 for 3 on cobia, the first one was lost at the gaff, the second we caught, and the third we couldn’t get to bite after finding him a couple different times (Big Fish). It’s been the weirdest year with fish getting excited and going down on a bait, but not eating it. The one we caught weighed 42 pounds and was big enough for us to win the tournament believe it or not.

Another fun day! I didn’t have a charter booked today so I took my Father Danny and my little sister Brittany out on a quick catching trip! We ran to the North rocks and quickly started boating Sheepshead. It was a great day of many first, Brittany caught her first ever Sheepie and her first ever Bull Red!

It was a ton of fun watching her fight this fish on a light tackle rod that I built for her a few years ago as a Bday gift! Also the Red Snapper bite was on fire on the rocks. We must have released 5-6 fish with one be a solid 18″ fish! The bite is still on fire in the Pass and should stay hot for a few more weeks. Don’t miss out on this annual Spawn!

Great day on the water with Family and a pretty dang good fish fry afterwards!!!!!

What a week!! I’m sure glad the wind and weather finally calmed down enough for me to be able to get back on the water! Today I was joined by Dan Coyle, Greg McMurtry and Andrew Grech. We decided to follow the predictable pattern of the spawning Sheepshead and load the cooler with some of these wonderful tasting fish. With a strong West wind predicted to blow through around noon we had to get on em and get on em fast.

We rocketed towards the North rocks and quickly started loading the box with solid 3-4lb fish. We couldn’t seem to locate the larger fish I have been catching in weeks past, but these were a quality grade of fish and a welcome guest aboard the South Again. After about two hours of catching we decided to try and land a few large Bull reds to add some color to our day. Unfortunately I struck out on the reds. We tried all the local hot spots in the Pass but just couldn’t seem to get away from the Sheepies.

Back to plan “A” we headed back to the North Rocks and went back to catching again. With our cooler stuffed and our arms tired I decided to hit one of my favorite Snapper spots in the Bay and try for something a little different. 1st drop all three rods double over and drags start screaming………………… up comes more sheepshead. With them in the cooler we turned her towards the East and slowly made our way back to the launch in a building West chop.

Another great day on the water!

The bite this week has been amazing and today was no exception. Maria Patti, Christian Danforth, James and John David Elliot met me at shoreline park at 10am ready to go!! We quickly headed towards the North Rocks where the bites has been on fire. We were pleased to see that there was only one boat there when we arrived. We boated 7 large sheepshead on live shrimp in a matter of minutes. The Sheepies were all between 4-6lbs and hungry!

After putting a few fish on ice we headed off to mess with the large schools of Bull Reds that have been very predictable this week. Once we made it to the area, the Reds were there as they have been all week long and they were HUNGRY!! We chased and sight fished em for about 2 hours, landing 6 and breaking off a few others. With my crews arms tired we headed back to the north rocks to finish off a cooler of Sheepshead.

Another great day on the water, another great charter and another reason I love being a Guide!!
